There has never been a better time to visit Lake Eyre! After Western Queensland’s extensive rainfall, much of that water will make its way south, through the Diamantina and other river systems that flow into Lake Eyre. The recent flood levels in some river areas which feed into Lake Eyre are as high as those seen in the 1974 major flooding event, which filled Lake Eyre to a depth of 5.7m.

The changing colours of the landscape during this time can really be appreciated best from the air. The recent rain has triggered a boom in wildlife, with organisms in the soil coming alive, providing food and nutrients for fish and water birds to breed. Millions of brine shrimp will hatch from eggs in the dry soil and the desert landscape changes to an inland oasis.
